A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Peel and Stick Wallpaper: The Peel and Stick Wallpaper Adventure

Updated: Mar 26

Ah, fellow design enthusiasts! Today, we're embarking on a quest that rivals the search for the Holy Grail—transforming a wall with peel and stick wallpaper. It's like giving your room a new lease on life without the paperwork. Perfect for statement walls that say, "I'm bold, beautiful, and can change my mind whenever I want." Let's ensure your wall doesn’t just look good; it looks fabulous.

Step 1: Choose Your Wallpaper

First up, picking the wallpaper is like selecting the right outfit for a first date. You want something that says, "I’m interesting, vibrant, and yes, I match the couch perfectly." Think about the room's vibe—does it get enough sunlight to grow a small jungle, or is it cozy enough for hibernation? Opt for patterns and colors that complement your furniture and accessories. Remember, lighter colors and vertical stripes can make a room feel larger and more open.

Step 2: Assembling Your Arsenal

Before diving in, let’s round up the usual suspects:

- A sharp utility knife

- A squeegee or smoothing tool

- A ladder

- A measuring tape

- A level

- A pencil

- A seam roller

- Scissors (just in case)

- A folding table (not necessary, but makes it much easier)

Step 3: Prepping the Stage

It's spa day for your wall. Clean it up, smooth out its life scars (also known as nail holes), and give it a once-over with a damp cloth. This moment of zen ensures it's ready to be the belle of the ball—or at least the living room.

Step 4: Measure Twice, Stick Once

Measure your wall's height like you're sizing up a tall, dark, and handsome stranger across the room. Subtract 2 inches from the width of your wallpaper and mark your wall (so if your wallpaper is 12 inches in width, you're gonna start wanna from the left corner and take your measure tape and measure out 10 inches and make a mark). Using this mark, take your level and mark a line vertically from ceiling to baseboard, ensuring that it is straight. This will be the starting part for your first piece of wallpaper. Getting this part right is extremely important because it ensures the rest of your pieces will be straight and line up perfectly. Measure the height of your wall and add 4 inches for good measure (two inch excess for the top and two inch excess for the bottom) — because who doesn’t like a little extra? This is where the folding table turns into your cutting station, making you feel like a DIY superhero. Roll out your wallpaper, pattern side up (I like to see what I am cutting, pattern side down if there is a grid on the back), and cut strips to the length of your measurement plus 4 inches. It's crucial to align the pattern from strip to strip if your wallpaper has a repeat. So I usually go ahead and line up the pattern to cut a second piece (I usually only cut two pieces at a time).

Step 5: The Moment of Truth

Peel back the top of your wallpaper like you’re unveiling a surprise, only about 12 inches. Place it slightly onto the ceiling because, let’s face it, perfection is in the overhang (1-2 inches). Align it with your meticulously drawn line and press. I recommend starting at the top, only press along the line, and lightly tack the left corner to the wall to hold the wallpaper in place. Then you want to move to the middle and lightly press along the line. Then move to the bottom and do the same. If it’s a bit off, don’t worry—peel and stick is the forgiving type. You can easily go back and adjust. Once your line is where you want it, go back to the middle and press from right to left all the way to the corner and work your way up with the smoother, then start from the middle and work my way to the bottom. You will notice that the left will overlap the corner 2 inches (remember that is the 2 inches you subtracted earlier - this is in case there is a bow in the wall), and that is OK. Personally, I have been doing this so long that I go ahead and trim my wallpaper at this point.

Step 6: The Pattern Match Dance

Next up, ensure your wallpaper strips are cozying up correctly. This is like setting up two friends on a date and hoping they hit it off. Match the patterns with the precision of a matchmaker, ensuring a seamless conversation between strips. Remember some patterns overlap and some do not. Repeat the application process ensuring each strip is straight and smooth.

Step 7: Trimming the Edges

Now, Use your utility knife with the confidence of a chef filleting a fish. Trim the excess for a finish so sharp, it could make a cactus jealous. Use the smoothing tool as your guide, crafting edges that would make a geometry teacher proud. Go over the entire wall with your squeegee or smoothing tool to secure the paper and eliminate any remaining air bubbles.

Step 8: Admiring Your Handiwork

Take a step back and marvel at the transformation. Your wall now looks so good it might start getting unsolicited compliments. It's a masterpiece that whispers, "Look at me, I'm the epitome of style and grace—and I did it myself."

And there you have it, folks! A wall so stunning, it might just become the next big influencer. Remember, in the world of DIY, the journey is half the fun—especially when it ends with a wall that could grace the pages of a design magazine.
